Beachlife Tarifa – winter sunshine in Europe’s surfing capital
Sending you some sunny rays from Tarifa, one of Europe’s greatest hotspots for kite and wind surfing. Facing the Atlantic with its white sandy beaches, this awesome holiday destination on Spain’s Costa de la Luz in Andalusia is brilliant fun and an all-year-round place to visit. Little gems of hotels and chiringuitos (beach bars) are dotted all along the Playa Los Lances, and today, we’re at the fab boutique Hotel Arte y Vida.
After a fantastic drive on the coast road that connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Atlantic, and which took us to Tarifa through the local mountain range, we put in a pit-stop at Europe’s most southerly view point, where we could see the Rif Mountains shrouded in cloud cover across the Strait of Gibraltar. With this stunning view ingrained in our memory, we headed past futuristic looking wind farms down to the ‘other side’, where the landscape changed dramatically from where we were coming. Suddenly long, sandy beaches opened up in front of us – a view so stunning, our jaws dropped. No wonder, that this place is known as a Mecca for kite surfers, with the GKA (Global Kitesports Association) holding regular championships on these shores.
Our destination today is the famous surf hotel Arte y Vida, and we’re joining them for Happy Hour. Not much drink needed to feel happy watching the action on the water and horse-back riders on the beach, to be honest. The sun here is still warm in November, and locals take every opportunity to hang out at this cool place just outside Tarifa in direction of Vejer and Cádiz – two stunning Andalusian towns steeped in history, about an hour’s drive away. On arrival, we’re heading straight for the chiringuito by the surf centre, with its great beach vibe and total chill atmosphere. And who else do we bump into but Patrick, who is by now part of the fixtures & fittings of this place. His jewellery and handicraft are perfect to take home as a little memory of the time spent here, and the total bliss experienced on the Costa de la Luz.
