Travel Experience Tobago: what to do, where to stay & the best trail riding experience on horseback ever

Travel Experience: Being With Horses, Tobago

Our intrepid explorer, Claudia Peifer, has been jet-setting again. After romancing it up in Vienna and whale watching in Gibraltar, this time her expeditious nature saw her touch down in terrific Tobago – we know, it’s a tough job. But someone’s got to do it.

But, while she did get through her fair share of sun soaking, she wasn’t there to simply lounge and road test the hotel’s cocktail menu.

No, instead, we wanted her to explore the incredible offering on the island, including checking out a genuinely inspirational spot – Being With Horses.

Run by devoted pair Veronika and Lennon, Being With Horses has been serving holidaymakers with unforgettable equine adventures for over 15 years and getting through some pretty incredible charity work too.

But what is this unique place? What makes it so special? And what can you do there?

Over to you, Claudia!

What is Being With Horses?

So, picture this: Tucked away in Tobago’s super chill Buccoo Village, Being With Horses isn’t just your average horseback ride. Nah, it’s way more. It’s a super cool place where amazing horses just live their best lives, free and happy, frolicking in the local environment. And hanging out with them can actually help you feel more balanced and calm yourself. Win-win, right?!

But if you thought you would get your choice of the nags, think again. Here, your horse buddy picks you. They then gently guide you through the charming village, through shaded mangrove wetlands, and finally, onto a wide-open beach for an epic ride.

But the absolute highlight for most folks? It’s gotta be swimming with these gentle giants in the warm Caribbean Sea right there in Buccoo Bay. Trust me, it’s one of those pinch-me moments you’ll never forget!

Meet Veronika and Lennon

The magic behind Being With Horses comes from two truly inspiring people, Veronika Danzer-La Fortune and Lennon La Fortune.

Veronika, originally from Germany, made her dream come true when she moved to Tobago in 2006: helping people connect with horses. She kicked off Being With Horses in 2007. And as you’ll see from the video above, she really is “in her element” looking after the horses.

Then there’s Lennon, a Tobagan and true horseman who grew up loving animals and shares Veronika’s deep passion for both horses and people. Lennon performs many roles at the centre including founder, instructor, caretaker, carpenter and coach, as well as being an Equine Hoof & Bodycare Specialist.

Together, they’ve created this super chill vibe where happy, stress-free horses just get you, helping you find your own balance, mind, body and soul.

Healing With Horses Foundation

But there’s an even deeper layer of magic happening here. In 2010, Veronika also established the non-profit Healing with Horses Foundation.

This incredible organization uses the power of equine therapy to support individuals with special needs, especially kids who might have been told they’d never lead a “normal” life. It’s truly heartwarming to see how these rescued horses, some of whom were former racehorses, bring so much positive change.

The Foundation offers a bunch of amazing and unique therapeutic programs, including:

  • Equine Nature Therapy
  • Art Therapy and School Sessions
  • Park Visits and Play Sessions
  • Riddim Therapy

They’ve seen incredible success stories, like Christiano Baird, who’s been part of the program since 2009 and has made amazing strides in overcoming challenges related to cerebral palsy, thanks to his time with the horses. It’s a testament to the profound connection between humans and these magnificent animals.

Family Experience or Bucket List Break?

Whether you’re planning an awesome family getaway or looking to tick off a major bucket list item, Being With Horses completely fits the bill.

This two-hour guided tour teaches you how to understand and gently interact with horses, making it a fantastic bonding experience for the whole family.

The chance to walk and swim with them in the sea is seriously profound and unforgettable, whether you’re a seasoned rider or it’s your very first time. They’re open every day, but definitely book ahead since spots are limited. It’s a must-do for any Tobago trip!

Other Awesome Things to Do in Tobago

Of course, this equine paradise certainly sounds like a Tobago no-brainer. But what else is there to do on this diminutive dot of land in the sparkling Caribbean Sea?

1. Scarborough

Scarborough, Tobago’s lively capital, is usually buzzing, especially when cruise ships dock. While you’re there, you absolutely have to hit up Sue’s local street food spot – and if you’ve seen our Mercato Metropolitano experience, you’ll know we love us a bit of street grub. But, rumor has it, Sue makes the best “doubles” on the island. Seriously, don’t miss out!

2. Fort King George

Perched high above Scarborough, Fort King George is a cool historical spot. You can wander around the old grounds, check out the cannons, and soak in some seriously stunning views of the coast. Perfect for history buffs and anyone who loves a good photo op!

3. Pigeon Point

Okay, Pigeon Point is basically Tobago’s superstar beach. Think soft white sand, palm trees swaying, and water so clear and blue it looks photoshopped. It’s the ultimate chill-out spot, but it’s also fantastic for all sorts of water sports in Tobago.

Wonderful Water Sports in Pigeon Point

The waters around Tobago are just begging to be explored! You can go snorkelling or diving to check out amazing marine life, like the world’s biggest brain coral at Kelleston Drain or the sunken M.V. Maverick wreck.

Feeling more adventurous? Try kiteboarding for an adrenaline rush or head out for some deep-sea fishing.

4. Buccoo Bay

Alongside the incredible Being With Horses, Buccoo Bay also draws tourists every year to awesome experiences like Buccoo Reef Marine Park – Tobago’s largest coral reef system.

This protected marine park is an absolute underwater playground! Peek at vibrant corals and colourful fish from a glass-bottom boat, or dive right in with a mask and snorkel. Its shallow waters are perfect for everyone, from tiny tots to seasoned swimmers.

Expect to meet angelfish, parrotfish, and maybe even a curious turtle! Plus, many tours include a dip in the magical Nylon Pool – a super shallow and warm section of sea!

5. Englishman’s Bay

If you’re looking for a quieter, more secluded slice of paradise – with lashings of local history, Englishman’s Bay is your spot. And while you’re there, grab a bite at Ulles restaurant. Serving up delicious local food in a super charming open-air setting, it’s a real taste of Tobago!

6. Castara Bay

Castara Bay is super pretty, with a lively fishing village that gives you a real feel for local culture. Plus, the sunsets here are out of this world!

7. Parlatuvier

Parlatuvier is another truly picturesque beach that’s just enchanting. It’s the perfect place to escape the crowds and just enjoy some serene natural beauty

But Bacolet Beach club is more like a two-for-one resort, as it also plays host to my digs for this Caribbean adventure – the gorgeous Half Moon Blue Hotel.
